Minor syllabus changes and classes on Friday

Just a quick FYI re: your syllabus (all classes): I made some minor corrections. No changes in dates.

I also added the Wednesday office hour, which I neglected to post earlier.

I'll be checking will MED581 and JRN378 re: class this Friday. Will you be here? Check this space for possible cancellation.

One last thing: I will be away from my office hour on Thursday, but I'll be in all day on Friday.

Ice storm aftermath

So here's what's happening:

MED581: We'll do the last of the class presentations on Tuesday and finish our discussion about the final. I'll also hand back your case studies.

JRN378: I've canceled the scavenger hunt :-( So we'll use Tuesday to edit assignment #3. If you've already handed it in, that's okay. You may work on it on Tuesday and hand it in again.

JRN374: New due date for assignment #3: Monday of finals week by 2:30 in my office. Do not send by e-mail. Also, let me know by Thursday of finals week how you fulfilled your publishing requirement.

November 30, 2006

No class today

At 11:00 a.m. the weather has become dangerous. No more classes today.

JRN378: I'm here now because I have to be. You are welcome to work on assignment #3 or go home.

JRN374: Stay home. Go home. No class. We'll work on your third assignment next week. Due date will be Monday of finals week.

November 28, 2006

No office hours today

I must be away from my office during regular office hours today. If you need me, please send e-mail or see me before/after class today. I'll resume regular office hours on Thursday.

All Classes: News and stuff

We're getting down to the end of the semester. Here are a few things you need to know:

1. If you handed something in and I haven't returned it, please say something! Every now and then I discover a student paper or assignment hiding in the middle of my brief case--usually because the student was absent on the day I returned them to the class.

2. Double check your syllabus often. I've made some due-date changes and/or other minor changes. Ask if you have questions.

Class News:

JRN374: I've made more due-date changes. Please check your syllabus. Also--SUPER IMPORTANT--you should plan some one-on-one time to work with me re: your feature assignment. And--SUPER IMPORTANT--don't forget your publishing requirement. A few of you have taken care of this. See me if you need help.

JRN378: Bring your raw assignment #2 pix to class so we can edit them in Photoshop before you turn them in.

MED581: Your case study is due soon.

October...a strange month

Now that that we've survived October, I'll be back on a normal schedule. And back to communicating with you on the J Cafe.

A few quick class notes:

JRN374: We'll be delving deeper into opinion writing this week. And will also make another sweep around the room to check on your feature stories. Come prepared with an idea--any idea--and we'll work on it.

JRN378: Your first photo assignment is due this week. Remember to turn it in by e-mail as a Power Point presentation. All pictures must have accurate cutlines.

MED581: This week we'll be discussing privacy. And I'll also prep you for your big week next week. That's when we split into teams for the cheesy prize competition.

September 28, 2006

All classes: Check your syllabus

I'll be out of town beginning 12 October. I won't return until after fall break starts.

JRN374: Be sure to attend class on 10 October. That'll be a "nuts 'n bolts" day. We'll discuss upcoming assignments so that you'll be able to spend your time out of class wisely.

JRN378 and MED 581: 10 October is mid term exam day. We'll be discussing your exam next week in class.

Off the hook!

I was not chosen for jury duty (may have had something to do with the tu-tu and swim fins). So classes will meet on Thursday as usual.

September 4, 2006

All Classes: No class on Tuesday

I have to report for jury duty on Tuesday 5 September. All classes are canceled. Please check back at the J Cafe for details about Thursday. Also, help spread the word to your classmates.

Please be sure to read all assignments for this week.

MED581 students: Please be sure to post your biography to The Golden Mean.

Office hours set

My office hours this semester will be TR 12:30 to 3:30. I have added this information all web pages and syllabi.

How to use RSS feeds

Make checking this blog VERY easy. Subscribe to the RSS feed. RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication. Here's some information about RSS from Wikipedia. There's a lot more here than you need to know. All you're interested in is learning how to subscribe to a feed from a browser or newsreader.

There are many ways to subscribe to an RSS feed. You can do it through your Google home page (assuming you've set up one). You can use a browser. I like Flock best.

Or, you can use a free (!) dedicated newsreader (application), such as:

For JRN374 and JRN378 students, I can show you how to do this in class. For MED581 students, well, you're on your own--but I'm happy to help you if you want to stop by my office.

Remember: You don't have to use RSS to read this blog. RSS simply makes keeping track of it much easier.

Where to find your syllabus

Okay, I'll make it real easy for you. Here are the direct links to my class syllabi:

JRN374 Feature/Opinion Writing

JRN 378 Photojournalism

MED581 Media Ethics

Please read your syllabus carefully. Come to class on Thursday ready to ask questions.

Welcome back to school!

Hi! Welcome back to school, and welcome to The J Cafe. I hope you had a fun and productive summer.

This blog will be a clearing house for information about all my classes. What will you read here? Anything that I need to communicate with you as a class. So you should check this blog regularly. If you're really slick about it, you can plug the RSS feed into your newsreader or web browser. If you have no idea what that is, I'll walk you through it in class. That way checking is automatic.

To help you organize the information on this blog, I have set up categories so that you can easily find any posting that has scrolled off this page. You'll find these on the sidebar.

You'll find numerous links that you may find useful for class on the sidebar. And you'll also find some useful resources on my main site Rhetorica.

If you haven't done so already, please go to my faculty site to find your class and syllabus. Be sure to read the syllabus carefully and bring questions to class on Thursday.
