Rhetorica: Press-Politics Journal

Wag that finger…

Want to start a blog about the news media? Looking for a name? Try: The Journoscold.

This term comes from CJR Daily in an entry about the AP coverage of Brian Williams’ first three nights as NBC anchor:

We wouldn’t be journoscolds if we didn’t pause to point out that this fixation–shared by network news executives, producers, and the press who cover them–on who’s up or down in the ratings too often drowns out other, related issues, such as the actual quality of the news the networks offer and what bold steps might be required to improve it.

Just in case you’re wondering, CJR apparently coined the term. Google shows the first use in this entry on 1 September 2004.

I have yet to watch Williams on NBC. I used to watch him on MSNBC a few years ago. My impression: A light-weight version of Peter Jennings. Perhaps I’ll take a look this week.
