Rhetorica: Press-Politics Journal

July 15, 2004

: What’s a little advice cost (worth)?…

Look, either have your campaign staff brief you on the correct answers or REFUSE TO ANSWER! Point out, in a diplomatic way of course, what an idiot the interviewer is for even asking such a silly question. Hello! There are a few more important things in this world to think about than the cost of a 6-pack (er, well, for a political candidate anyway).

Sing along with me now: When will they ever learn? When willlll they eeeev-er learn?

This schtick worked so well for Bush 4l, the press just can’t give it up. My personal opinion is that if you ask 100 men – married or not – what the price of milk or beer is, they won’t have a clue. I do the shopping for my family, and even I don’t know what the price of a gallon of milk is – I just buy the damned stuff because I need it. My point is, this is just more “gotcha” journalism, and I really don’t see any end in sight. The courts will have to get involved before the press accepts any level of accountability or responsibility – and I really don’t see that happening any time soon, either.

If he doesn’t know the price of a six-pack of beer because he buys his beer by the keg, then I shall have to consider voting for him. :-)

    Hee!Hee! Me too, Lex!

Uh, Rebecca, can you explain to me how the courts would enforce journalistic responsibility?

I agree, it’s a silly question. Obviously, the price of milk is different in different parts of the country and, anyway, who cares? They have been doing this ever since the first Bush showed he didn’t know how a grocery scanner worked. That’s really important for the president or vice-president. I may not have any experience jumping off a building, but I know it hurts when you get to the bottom.

You are quite right, MWS – as it stands now, the courts cannot/will not enforce press responsibility. I should have been more clear about my point.

It looks like I’m gonna get my wish after all about court intervention in the press. MoveOn.org announced that it will hold a press conference on Monday (7/19) to disclose that it will serve court papers on Fox News in order to force Fox News to be held accountable. Considering the current Joe Wilson flap, does anyone really believe this will stop at Fox? WhooHoo! Let the games begin! http://www.tvbarn.com/ticker2004/archives/024177.shtml Can’t wait to see Pinch frog-marched out of the NYTimes building!
