Rhetorica: Press-Politics Journal

October 8, 2003

Whither success?…

Professional writer? Been there; done that. I’m now giving it away on Rhetorica and in the odd world of academic publishing.

A (very) few others are discovering that blogging can be a springboard to publication in print journalism. This is not a “trend” because the numbers are too low. Instead, what we have here is a cultural curiosity: How a new medium may create a new kind of celebrity for a select few.

I will have more to say about this in another post later today. Stay tuned…

This works in reverse, too. One of my favorite bloggers is Roger L. Simon. He is a writer of mystery novels and a screenwriter. He began blogging in order to flog his latest novel, Directors Cut(I know, it needs to be underlined, but I still can’t figure out how to work the underliner!). I love his blog, but I don’t read much fiction, and I wouldn’t read a mystery if my life depended on it - unless I could read the ending first! However, since I love his blog, and my husband is a big thriller/mystery fan, John Grisham, being his favorite, I ordered Roger’s book anyway. So it was a good marketing ploy for someone who was an author first, and a blogger incidentally!
