A version of this discussion crops up from time to time on the Internet's various journalism-related discussion groups, usually based on the question: What should I/my child study to be prepared for a career in journalism?

My canned response includes those things Bollinger and you listed and also includes:
--a broad liberal-arts education, highlighted by a disciplined major that requires the student to go broadly and deeply into a subject that sings to him/her, using both basic and advanced research techniques, and to both defend a thesis and critique the theses of others.
--several years' worth of study of at least one foreign language, including travel abroad if possible.
--at least basic psychology
--basic spreadsheet and database applications.
--at least basic introduction to the world's major religions
--constitutional law

I'm probably forgetting some things, but hey.
