Right vs. Left = Silly (not Stupid)
The Springfield News-Leader published a letter of mine yesterday. I was reacting to a column written by a local citizen. The S N-L runs a regular series of such columns under the banners From The Right and From The Left. The column in question is a perfect example of the kind of silliness you get when you force people into political boxes.
The writer has no real point to make; he's being merely partisan. And this is exactly the problem (the silliness). Such division encourages citizen columnists to demonize the other. The dreaded enemy--the bane of your existence and the cause of all your problems--is right there in the titles of the columns.
