More Required Reading
Tim at Jig’s Old Saws posts an excellent reading list for those interested in the “decline” of journalism. Is journalism in decline? Has it ever reached a postion from which to decline? Who gets to say? What are the criteria? I can’t promise you’ll find answers in this list, but you will get a good grounding in press criticism since the the Hutchins’ Report.
Now would also be a good time to re-vist my list of required reading for journalists.

Thanks, Andy! I’ve updated the post to link to your most excellent required reading list.
I can promise that readers will find criteria and metrics in that media-crit list for analyzing and discussing journalism beyond the simplistic ideology based criticism found at Media Matters, MRC, FAIR, AIM, ….
Even better, you’ll know more about journalism than most of its practitioners.
Tim… Yes, it would be nice if more journalists were aware of these studies/essays. Part of the problem, however, is that there still exists in journalism an antagonism toward academic inquiry into the profession.
