How to Cover the Nominating Process

I’m attending the McCormick Tribune Specialized Reporting Institute this week at Drake University in Des Moines. The topic is “Covering the Presidential Nominating Process.” The institute is a joint operation by the Drake University School of Journalism & Mass Communication and The Poynter Institute.

This is a topic of particular interest to me.

Some of the early topics of discussion this morning include:

Should journalists draw conclusions or play it straight?

Do journalists have a role in “healing” our civic discourse?

If the public wants more in-depth coverage of candidates, how do journalists accomplish this with reduced resources?

How is the truth to be sorted out from “he-said/she-said reporting?

Can journalists re-imagine how to tell the story of important issues such as tax policy?

What standards should journalists use to rank and cover candidates?

I’ll attempt some answers to these questions, and others that arise, during the source of the institute.
