Been done...
I once suggested that newspapers ought to hire local journalism professors as ombudsmen. Well, it's been done. The Cedar Rapids Gazette once employed Kenneth Starck, of the University of Iowa, as a part-timer. I learned that from Neil Nemeth's book News Ombudsmen in North America.
