I find the idea that the Kerry and Bush campaigns should/would suspend campaigning, or at least certain kinds of campaigning, this week in the wake of the death of Ronald Reagan to be noble and laughable. The gesture is noble because it at least pretends–for noble reasons–that some human endeavors or situations are not political. The gesture is laughable because political creatures cannot suspend what they are even for noble reasons. The whole thing is becoming an unseemly affair. Using Reagan’s legacy for political gain is far more normal political behavior.
