Neil Postman, author of Amusing Ourselves to Death and other cogent commentaries on media and technology, is dead at age 72. He had a great influence on my work; I will miss his voice of sanity. Jay Rosen offers a moving eulogy from the perspective of a former student.

: CNN’s Thursday night fight……
The death of Neil Postman, of which I have just become aware, is hitting me very hard. His is the only voice of sanity I have heard in a very long time. To lose him is a tragedy. It says much about the nature of our culture and discourse that I am hearing everything about days and nights at the neverland ranch and Janet’s Superbowl caper, but the death of Neil Postman, who spent his life trying to make the air clear enough for enlightenment to show though gets a momentary squib on NPR. I’ve got to get off this planet….
